Lok Sewa Aayog Sangathit Sanstha Preliminary Examination Syllabus

Lok Sewa Aayog has published the syllabus for the open competitive preliminary examination conducted for different positions in organized institutions. The examination is based on the Unified Examination System.

This preliminary or pre-qualifying examination is required for various non-technical fourth-level or assistant-level positions mentioned in the syllabus. Candidates who pass this examination can take part in the main examination as required by the concerned recruitment process.

Examination Scheme

The preliminary examination consists of 50 multiple-choice questions. Each question carries 2 marks, making the total examination worth 100 marks.

Subjects Included in the Syllabus

1. Geography, Environment and Population

This section covers basic knowledge of the geography of Nepal and the world. It includes continents, oceans, latitude, longitude, mountain ranges, rivers and lakes. Questions can also cover Nepal's geographical condition, natural resources, climate and population.

Environment-related topics include biodiversity, sustainable development, climate change, environmental management, urbanization and settlement.

2. History and Culture

This section includes important historical events of the world and Nepal. Candidates should study major periods of Nepal's history, including the Kirant, Lichchhavi, Medieval and Modern periods.

Questions may also cover Nepal's traditions, values, religions, cultures, languages, sports, arts and literature.

3. Economic Aspects and Development

The economic section includes basic knowledge of Nepal's economic indicators such as economic growth, GDP, national income, per capita income, balance of payment, remittance, foreign investment and foreign aid.

Candidates should also know about the current situation of agriculture, industry, trade, tourism, transportation, communication, education, health, energy and infrastructure development in Nepal.

4. Governance and Constitution

This part covers the meaning and importance of law, constitutional development and the Constitution of Nepal. It also includes Nepal's governance system, federal, provincial and local governments, democracy, human rights, periodic elections and adult franchise.

5. International Affairs and International Organizations

Candidates need to have general knowledge about Nepal's relations with countries such as India, China, Britain, America, Russia, France and Japan, along with other SAARC countries.

The syllabus also includes the United Nations, SAARC, BIMSTEC, ASEAN, European Union, World Bank, IMF, Asian Development Bank, Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and SAFTA.

6. Science, Technology, Public Health and Current Affairs

This section covers scientific measurement, measurement systems and units, major scientific inventions and developments, computers and information and communication technology.

Basic knowledge of public health, diseases, food, nutrition, sanitation and commonly used materials is also included. Candidates should also follow important national and international current affairs related to science, technology and public health.

7. Office and Public Management

This section focuses on basic office work and public management. Topics include office functions, communication, correspondence, registration and dispatch, filing, circulars, orders, record management and public service delivery.

It also includes public charter, e-governance, human values, civic rights, duties, responsibilities and discipline.

8. Applied Mathematics

The mathematics section covers basic calculations that are commonly used in everyday and office-related situations. Topics include fundamental operations, unitary method, fractions and decimals, percentage, ratio and proportion, profit and loss, tax and commission, simple and compound interest, average and probability.

9. Public Enterprises

This is the largest section of the syllabus, carrying 20 marks. It covers the concept, development, objectives and importance of public enterprises.

Candidates should study the classification and sectors of public enterprises in Nepal, their current status and activities, corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, their role in economic development, privatization and globalization.

The syllabus also includes basic knowledge of human resource management, budgeting, accounting, auditing, financial literacy and Nepal's financial regulatory authorities, including Nepal Rastra Bank, Nepal Insurance Authority and Securities Board of Nepal.

Important Examination Rules

The question paper may be available in Nepali, English or both languages. The examination uses multiple-choice questions. If a candidate gives an incorrect answer, 20 percent of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted. No marks are added or deducted when a question is left unanswered.

A calculator is not allowed in the multiple-choice examination. Candidates should also note that laws, rules, policies and constitutional provisions included in the syllabus are considered according to the situation stated in the syllabus.

How to Prepare for the Examination

Start with the syllabus and divide the subjects into small sections. Give more time to topics that carry higher marks, but do not completely ignore the smaller sections.

For General Awareness and current affairs, regular reading and revision are useful. For Mathematics, practice is more important than simply reading formulas. For Management and Public Enterprises, make short notes and revise them regularly.

Since the exam has 50 questions in 45 minutes, solving questions within a limited time is also important. Practice MCQs regularly and pay attention to negative marking before selecting an answer.
